Christmas markets and 2026 workshops!
I’m not sure when is too early to mention the ‘C word’, but Christmas market season seems to have come around rather quickly this year.
I’m attending a few events in person this year, and have a couple of other exciting things to share in this post, too.
This Saturday, 29th November, I will be at Wintertide in Buckfastleigh Town Hall from 10am to 5pm. There are many beautiful artisan and craft people taking their wares along, as well as some delicious food - last year was great.
From Monday the 1st to Sunday 14th December I will have my work on display and for sale in a pop up shop at Moska on Cathedral Street in Exeter city centre.
On the 2nd December from 4pm to 8pm I’ll be at Totnes late night shopping, in the Old School Hall at The Mansion on Totnes High Street
On the 5th December I'm on home turf at Okehampton Edwardian Evening from 5pm-9pm in Red Lion Yard
and finally on the 6th December I'll be at Brentor Mistletoe Fair in Brentor village hall from 10am to 2pm.
It would be lovely if anyone who follows my work comes to say hello at one of these events (though I won’t be in person at the pop up shop I'm afraid). I’ll have copies of my book, my newly released calendar, prints, notebooks, a range of greeting cards, and something new…
The eagle eyed reader may have spotted a new addition to the navigation menu on this website. This year I’ve been very lucky to be asked to lead photography workshops by Moor Trees and Dartmoor Preservation Association, and as part of Dartmoor Outdoor Festival. For 2026 I've set up a small number of workshop dates of my own.
These sessions are intended to be for small groups, with a maximum of 6 participants, each with a different theme and subject throughout the year. The atmosphere will be friendly and engaging, including some games to get you to see the world differently, whilst in the company of fellow photography enthusiasts. You can read more about the workshops here, or explore the specific sessions linked below.
Hopefully see you at a Christmas market :)
Tom
We’ll walk a short route which takes us through some stunning spring woodland where the floor will hopefully be carpeted with bluebells. I’ve reliably found decent coverage of these beautiful flowers on this date over several years, but each year varies in terms of intensity and the peak flowering window.
On the other leg of our walk we’ll pass alongside a river which winds its way part gnarled tree roots and around granite boulders. This workshop is all about intimate scenes found in Dartmoor’s valleys and surrounded by beautiful woodland.
What to expect
This workshop is 3 hours in duration and will include a short walk of up to 2.5 miles, allowing us plenty of time to stop and immerse ourselves in nature, and take a quick breather if required. The route will follow well defined and reasonably accessible trails. You’ll be part of a small group, with a maximum of 6 attendees.
We will cover topics such as:
Identifying photographic subjects
How to compose beautiful images both using some ‘rules’, and ignoring them
Learning what you’re trying to ‘say’ with a photograph to help convey emotion
How to work with the available light on the day
What settings you can use on your camera to make the most of the conditions in the field without post processing
Most importantly I believe that learning should be enjoyable. The atmosphere will be relaxed and engaging, and you can feel comfortable to ask questions, experiment with new approaches, and share your love of photography with the group. We may even play some games to encourage you to see things differently, helping you develop your photographer’s eye.
Participants will be emailed more detailed instructions on the meeting location one month prior to the event.

The old saying goes ‘the best camera is the one you have with you’. If you only have access to a smartphone that’s totally fine, some of the images in my book were created with one. However if you have a more advanced camera feel free to bring it, and as many lenses as you’re prepared to carry, with you.
If you’d like to explore hiring or borrowing equipment, please get in touch with me well in advance and I will try to help you.
Dartmoor is renowned for its changeable weather, so participants should come prepared to embrace its unpredictable nature.
Ensure you bring with you:
Camera / smartphone
Tripod if using a camera
Spare battery/memory card
Power bank if using a phone (I will have a backup with me)
Food and drink
Appropriate outdoor clothing - walking boots, waterproofs etc.
Transport to the meeting point
Personal insurance if applicable
A shower cap to cover your camera with if its rainy
Please don’t bring a drone as their use is prohibited within Dartmoor National Park.
Why book with me?
I have spent the past 7 years honing an approach to photography that is built around an intuitive ability to read the landscape, and respond to the conditions in front of me. I have used these skills to release a book of my images of Dartmoor National Park, a landscape I know intimately. Some people consider Dartmoor a tricky place to photograph, but I will share some tips and techniques to help you.
I am a proud member of Nature First, the alliance for responsible nature photography. Whilst we’re on our walk I will talk a little about the goals of Nature First to share how we can responsibly create and share images of the natural world.
I have chosen the locations of these walks carefully to minimise the impact on the environment, and chosen locations that only have suitable facilities for parking and walking without impact.
What about bad weather?
The workshop has been planned in such a way that inclement weather isn’t a problem. However if there are strong winds, heavy rain or weather warnings forecast plans may need to be adjusted, postponed or cancelled. Please ensure you have read my cancellation policy before booking.
A short walk will take us to one of Northern Dartmoor’s tors, and one of my favourite photographic locations on the whole moor. If we’re lucky we’ll experience a beautiful sunset. If we’re not it’s still a fantastic place to create images. There are many fascinating scenes around, and beyond the tor, to compose beautiful images of these fascinating rock formations, an ideal location to practice creating depth in your images, and how to hunt for simple compositions amongst all that granite.

We’ll visit one of the most beautiful stretches of ancient woodland and a stunning Dartmoor waterfall on this workshop. Hopefully the leaves will be giving a full display of their colour by this time and we’ll have some opportunities to talk about noticing details within the woodland, and how you can use water to create more abstract and intriguing images.
